The earthing system is that part of the electricity
network, necessary to ensure safety. For example it is the central component of the procedures for safe working. Its design and performance can have
a major impact on safety, security of electricity
supplies, power quality and construction costs. Despite this, earthing is often one of the most
misunderstood and least prepared aspects of
electrical power systems.
Earthing system design has become more complex due to higher fault currents, limited substation
areas, use of cables with a PVC outer sheath
and proximity of third party equipment such
as telecommunications. Better design of earthing systems is now demanded by customers.
