Soil resisitivity data is fundamental for earthing design calculations to be carried out. It is normally obtained by electrical resistivity soundings and/or driven rod measurements.

Resistivity soundings use the Wenner Array with spacings typically up to 60m for medium sized sites and 100m for large sites are commonly used. A multi-layer soil model is developed which can be used for detailed earthing design calculations, e.g. using the CDEGS® software package.
